The warrior mindset is one of the mindsets that we seek to foster here on The Eclectic Method. The warrior way has provided much of the framework for the way I live my life, and although I may not be swinging an axe on the bloodied battlefield, I am a member of the armed forces. I am a martial artist. I am a warrior.
I recently completed a leadership development course, and part of what I had to do for that course was to create my own warrior ethos. You see them across all branches of the military. The ethos is the code that a warrior is supposed to embody to inspire and develop their fighting spirit. It guides their behavior and influences their choices to build better men and women and better warriors.
You don’t have to be in the military to be a warrior or to adopt the warrior mindset. Sure, it helps because you’re living it in the military, but we can all benefit from the strength and courage the warrior mindset fosters to navigate the challenges of life. But what does it mean to be a warrior? That’s a tough question to answer, and I guarantee you will hear a slightly different answer from each warrior you ask.
Here’s a great place to start: ask yourself what would you fight for, and why?
Once you’ve pondered on that for a while, take a shot at creating your own warrior ethos. What that means is to find a way to express what being a warrior means to you, and make it into a code you can use to remind yourself how you should behave, what you believe in, and what you fight for.
We all go through battles, whether it’s with our own inner demons, or against nefarious forces, or with our fellow man, and the way we come through those battles unbroken and victorious starts with our mindset. However, the warrior mindset isn’t just beneficial in times of conflict. It bleeds into everything we do because it is a way of life that strives for excellence in everything.
I encourage you to adopt the warrior mindset, and to create your own warrior ethos that you can repeat to yourself to encourage and develop your growth as a warrior. Say it when you falter. Repeat it when you lose your way. Here is the one I wrote. It can be used as your own, or to provide an example for when you write your personal warrior ethos.
I am a warrior. I am devoted to excellence. I use my skill and the gifts that God has given me to serve and protect the ones I love and to serve and protect those who lack the means to protect themselves.
My character is forged in the fires of difficulty, and the heat of the flames, that pain we endure, is not the foe, it is our teacher. It beckons us to change course if we have the humility to listen.
I strive to emerge from the forge not broken, not destroyed by the heat, but as strong as iron, my willpower and my force of character honed like the blade carefully crafted by the master blacksmith.
As iron sharpens iron, so I sharpen my family, my friends, and my brothers and sisters at arms. I am solid and unwavering as the mountain. I am powerful and ferocious as the tiger.
Strength is peace. Knowledge and wisdom are power. The true enemy is evil, and evil doesn’t wait for you to be ready. It doesn’t care about your feelings. So I stay ready. I embody strength and discipline so that when the time comes, I can meet that evil and destroy it.
I strive to be the warrior in the garden, not the gardener in a war.
Now go forth and start training.
